ABOUT US
ART LABOR Gallery
Now in our 3rd space opened July 2017, ART LABOR Gallery is a contemporary gallery based in Shanghai and Vancouver, Canada. Winner of Time Out magazine’s “People’s choice award for best gallery in Shanghai” in 2014, Twice as Ringier Media’s “Most Outstanding Gallery 2017” and That’s Shanghai’s “Best Gallery award for 2017”, listed twice on Modern Painter’s top 500 galleries world wide, and ART INFO’s 20 best galleries in Asia list, the gallery has always strove to find unique artists, both emerging and established, from both China and around the globe. We based ourselves in Shanghai because it has become the center of artistic creation and financial power in Asia. At ART LABOR we began as a curious space exploring Shanghai’s new identity and the direction that emerging art was taking in China. We encourage our more established artists to support and mentor emerging artists, just as the gallery itself has a focus on the development of new talent and ideas. We have also shown a number of internationally recognized artists, including several having participated in the Venice Biennale. ART LABOR has played an integral role in the expansion of the Shanghai art scene, which is now, more than 13 years after we began here, decidedly more international in scope and has truly become the center of the art world in Asia. Cooperating with galleries and art professionals from around the world, the artists we show are a mix of Chinese nationals and of other countries… British, Canadian, American, Japanese, et al. We seek artists making truly original, meaningful and collectible work, intellectually and emotionally effecting or simply aesthetically pleasing.
Our modifiable gallery space, with movable walls and lighting, designed by international award winning architect Andrei Zerebecky, is 280㎡ (3000 sq. ft) is available for rental for special events, depending on the purpose and size. We are happy to host short-term events. Our upstairs loft and VIP art lounge is also available for possible meetings.
We are located in a fascinating neighborhood in Jing’an district, a mix of the new and the former Shanghai that is very quickly being erased. We are located 5 mins walk from Jason Atherton’s fashionable restaurant/bar “The Commune Social” and the WPP tower housing many of the 4A agencies just a few mins walks across a bicycle bridge over the historical and charming Suzhou Creek with its slow moving working boats. The famous Jade Buddha Temple and M50 Art District are down the street. Parking is available.
We are no longer accepting emailed artist submissions but welcome submissions by post to our address.
