Chinese ceramic artist Li Lihong was born in 1974 in Jiangxi province and, more specifically, in Jingdezhen, a village which has been the producer of the royal china porcelain for hundreds of years. He learned the art of ceramics alongside the Grand Master Qin Xiling. Li Lihong is presently both a practicing artist and professor of Chinese porcelain work at Fudan University, living and teaching in Songjiang on the south-west outskirts of Shanghai.
Unlike the more traditional work of his master, Li Lihong gives a contemporary touch to his work. His design and manufacture of traditionally painted china, in shapes known to all as some of the most well known symbols of Western cultural influences in the world today, make a strong and obvious statement. However, the tedious and difficult process of production and the fine detailing on the painted glazes counter this blatancy. This contrast expresses a very Chinese attitude toward the traditional arts, the difficult and arduous study involved in this process, and modern China’s challenge in retaining its famed mastery of these arts against a persuasive tide of outside influences. The limited number of these works, due to the difficult process of production from which only one work will survive out of ten, creates art of rarity and value in a world filled with cheap mass production and easily consumed culture.
