ART LABOR Gallery is pleased to present the works of You Si at his first solo show in China in 20 years. An early pioneer of abstract ink and wash painting in Beijing during the early 1980’s, You Si uses an eyedropper and both coloured and black inks on large size rice paper to achieve works that are entirely unique in the Chinese contemporary art scene.
You Si’s art is boundless both in meaning and in visual presentation. Nonetheless, the very possibility of embodying boundlessness is based on his manipulation of boundary, edge and separation. The most intriguing feature is his dealing with the negative space. It is no longer about the construction of the depth or structure of each composition. It is about possibilities: the very essence of life, change and evolution is defined by that rather ambiguous, elusive and uncertain space.
