Zhang Lehua

Shanghai, China

Zhang Lehua’s artistic practice is largely based on what he sees and hears in daily life. In his “Teens Social Science” Series, Zhang Lehua is inspired by the 1980s and 1990s Chinese government youth education propaganda that he grew up with, utilizing the similar style of comics, and applying his unique sense of humor and sarcasm as a way of commenting on the contemporary issues that the 1980 generation, including artist himself, has to confront in their daily life.

Besides his independent artistic practice, he is also a member of the “Double Fly Art Center”, whose main practice is performance recorded by videos. Their seemingly senseless and bizarre performances challenge the boundary of different media and provoke the relationship between public, art, and politics. Their performances attempt to avoid seriousness and careful planning, the lacking sense of discipline allows spontaneity as well as exciting collision.
