Coming from a 8th-generation farming family from the North of France, Eric Leleu (born 1979) studied economics and social sciences.

At 25, he settled down as a photographer in China (Shanghai) with the help of two grants from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and another from Paris city council.

Since then he has been working for international and Chinese magazines (The Guardian, Le Monde magazine, Die Zeit, New York Times, Newsweek, iLook, the Bund) as well as developing his own work dealing conceptually with documentary topics about China, its place and its perception in the world.
